The compressor is powered by the crankshaft's movement, and its clutch connects to the AC pulley. Like all components, the clutch can wear out. If it fails and gets stuck, your AC will malfunction. A clutch that jams closed prevents the compressor from starting, and your AC won't work. If the clutch is jammed open, the compressor will continue to run.
